About Kilchurn Castle
A romantic ruined castle on Loch Awe, symbol of Highland Scotland's beauty.
History of Kilchurn Castle
Built in the 15th century by Sir Colin Campbell, Kilchurn Castle occupies one of Scotland's most beautiful settings on a peninsula in Loch Awe. Originally constructed as a five-story tower house, it was expanded in the 17th century to accommodate changing military needs. The castle served the Campbells of Glenorchy (later Earls of Breadalbane) as both fortress and residence until it was abandoned in the 18th century. Now one of Historic Scotland's most photographed ruins, Kilchurn has become an iconic symbol of Highland romance, its dramatic silhouette reflected in the waters of Loch Awe capturing the essence of Scotland's castle heritage.
