Kisimul

Kisimul Castle, often referred to as the 'Castle in the Sea,' is located on a small rocky islet in Castle Bay, Barra, in Scotland's Outer Hebrides. The castle is believed to have been constructed in the 15th century by the MacNeil clan, who claim descent from the ancient Irish king Niall of the Nine Hostages. The strategic location of Kisimul allowed the MacNeils to control the surrounding waters and defend against Viking and other seafaring invaders. Over the centuries, the castle witnessed numerous skirmishes and played a crucial role in the clan's maritime dominance. In the 19th century, the MacNeils emigrated to America, and the castle fell into disrepair. However, in the 1930s, the 45th chief of Clan MacNeil, Robert Lister MacNeil, purchased Barra and began restoration efforts to revive the historic site. Today, Kisimul Castle is managed by Historic Environment Scotland and remains a symbol of Scottish heritage, attracting visitors who can explore its well-preserved keep, curtain walls, and the stunning views of the surrounding sea. Accessible by a short boat trip, Kisimul Castle offers a glimpse into the rich history and enduring legacy of the MacNeil clan.
