Kisimul Castle, often referred to as the 'Castle in the Sea,' is a striking fortress located on a small islet in Castle Bay, near the Isle of Barra in Scotland's Outer Hebrides. The castle's origins trace back to the 11th century, although the current structure was primarily built in the 15th century by the MacNeil clan, who were the dominant force in the region. The strategic location of Kisimul Castle allowed the MacNeils to control the surrounding waters and protect their territory from rival clans and seafaring invaders. Over the centuries, Kisimul Castle witnessed numerous battles and sieges, emblematic of the turbulent history of the Scottish clans. In the early 20th century, the castle fell into disrepair but was later restored by the 45th Chief of Clan MacNeil, Robert Lister MacNeil, in the mid-20th century. Today, Kisimul Castle is managed by Historic Environment Scotland and is open to visitors, who can explore its well-preserved keep, curtain walls, and chapel. The castle remains an iconic symbol of Scottish heritage, offering a unique insight into the feudal past of the Hebrides.
