Loch Doon Castle

Loch Doon Castle, originally constructed in the late 13th century, was strategically positioned on an island in Loch Doon to defend against English invasions during the Wars of Scottish Independence. The castle's origins are linked to the powerful Earls of Carrick, and its design features a distinct curtain wall and a central keep, typical of medieval Scottish fortifications. Throughout its history, Loch Doon Castle witnessed numerous sieges and played a pivotal role in local defence strategies. In the 14th century, it was temporarily captured by English forces but was soon reclaimed by Scottish hands. By the 16th century, the castle fell into disuse, and its stones were later repurposed for local building projects. In the 1930s, due to the construction of a hydroelectric scheme, the castle was dismantled and relocated to the shore of Loch Doon to preserve it from rising water levels. Today, visitors can explore the remnants of this historic site, enjoying the tranquil beauty of the surrounding landscape while reflecting on its storied past.
