About Mains Castle

A 16th-century courtyard castle, also known as Claverhouse Castle, seat of "Bonnie Dundee."

History of Mains Castle

Built in the 16th century, Mains Castle (also known as Claverhouse Castle and Fintry Castle) was the seat of the Graham family, most famously John Graham of Claverhouse, 1st Viscount Dundee, known as "Bonnie Dundee." The castle's courtyard design represents the sophisticated planning of 16th-century Scottish castle architecture, combining impressive residential quarters with defensive capabilities. Claverhouse's fame as a Jacobite leader who died at the Battle of Killiecrankie in 1689 has given the castle particular historical significance in Scottish history. The castle's preservation under private ownership ensures this important heritage site continues to represent both architectural achievement and the complex political history of late 17th-century Scotland.
