About Menstrie Castle

A 16th-century castle with a National Trust museum, birthplace of Sir William Alexander.

History of Menstrie Castle

Built in the 16th century, Menstrie Castle was the birthplace of Sir William Alexander, 1st Earl of Stirling, who founded Nova Scotia in Canada. The castle represents the Renaissance period when Scottish architecture was evolving from purely defensive structures to more comfortable residences. Though now converted to residential flats, part of the castle houses a National Trust for Scotland museum celebrating the connections between Scotland and Nova Scotia. The castle's preservation within modern housing demonstrates innovative approaches to maintaining historic Scottish architecture while meeting contemporary needs, ensuring this important heritage site remains accessible to future generations.
