Penicuik House

Penicuik House, a striking example of Palladian architecture, was built in the 1760s for Sir James Clerk, the 3rd Baronet of Penicuik. The estate has been in the Clerk family since the 17th century, showcasing a long lineage of Scottish heritage. The house was designed by Sir James Clerk himself, with influences from the renowned architect Robert Adam. Over the centuries, Penicuik House became a hub of cultural and social activity, hosting notable figures and events. Unfortunately, a devastating fire in 1899 left the mansion in ruins, and it remained a picturesque shell for much of the 20th century. In recent years, significant restoration efforts have been undertaken to preserve the estate's historical integrity.
