Rosslyn Castle

Rosslyn Castle, perched above the River North Esk near the village of Roslin, has a storied past that stretches back to the 14th century. Originally constructed by the St Clair family, the castle has witnessed numerous historical events and transformations over the centuries. It played a strategic role during the Wars of Scottish Independence and was later expanded in the 15th century by Sir William St Clair, the 3rd Prince of Orkney. The castle suffered considerable damage in 1544 during the Rough Wooing, a series of conflicts between Scotland and England, when it was attacked by English forces. Despite this, the St Clair family continued to reside there, rebuilding and restoring parts of the structure. Today, Rosslyn Castle remains partially in ruins, with some sections restored for use as private accommodation, offering visitors a glimpse into Scotland's medieval past. The site is closely associated with the nearby Rosslyn Chapel, adding to its allure for history enthusiasts and tourists alike.
