Skipness Castle

Skipness Castle, situated on the Kintyre Peninsula, was originally constructed in the early 13th century by the Clan MacSween. This strategic site was chosen for its commanding views over the Kilbrannan Sound, making it a key defensive position. In the late 13th century, the castle came under the control of the powerful Clan MacDonald, who expanded and fortified the structure. During the Wars of Scottish Independence, Skipness Castle played a pivotal role, witnessing numerous skirmishes and changes in allegiance. By the 16th century, the Campbell family took possession, further enhancing its defences. The castle's strategic importance waned over time, and it eventually fell into disrepair. Today, Skipness Castle is managed by Historic Environment Scotland and is open to the public. Visitors can explore its well-preserved ruins, including the impressive curtain wall and tower house, while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The site offers a unique insight into medieval Scottish architecture and history, making it a must-visit for history enthusiasts and tourists alike.
