Tolquhon Castle

Tolquhon Castle, located near the village of Tarves in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, is a remarkable testament to Scottish Renaissance architecture. The castle's origins date back to the late 16th century when it was extensively rebuilt by Sir William Forbes, the 7th Laird of Tolquhon, between 1584 and 1589. Sir William sought to create a residence that was both a comfortable home and a symbol of his family's status and wealth. The design of Tolquhon Castle reflects this dual purpose, featuring a blend of defensive elements and elegant residential quarters. The castle's most notable feature is its gatehouse, which includes a distinctive carved panel bearing the arms of the Forbes family. Tolquhon Castle remained in the Forbes family until the early 18th century, after which it fell into disrepair.
