Urquhart

Urquhart Castle, strategically located on the shores of Loch Ness, has a history steeped in conflict and intrigue. The site has been a stronghold since the early medieval period, with the current ruins dating back to the 13th century. Originally built to defend against Norse invaders, the castle played a significant role during the Wars of Scottish Independence. In the 14th century, it changed hands between the English and the Scots, with Robert the Bruce eventually gaining control. Over the centuries, Urquhart was a focal point in the clan wars and Jacobite risings, witnessing sieges and destruction. In the late 17th century, the castle was partially destroyed to prevent it from falling into Jacobite hands. Today, Urquhart Castle is managed by Historic Environment Scotland and is one of the country's most visited sites, offering stunning views of Loch Ness and a visitor centre that provides insights into its storied past. Despite its ruinous state, the castle's dramatic setting and rich history continue to captivate visitors from around the world.
