Yester

Yester Castle, nestled in the scenic landscape near Gifford, East Lothian, was constructed in the mid-13th century by Sir Hugo de Giffard, a notable figure of his time. Known as the 'Wizard of Yester,' Sir Hugo was reputedly a sorcerer, and this legend is immortalised in the castle's most famous feature, the Goblin Ha' (Goblin Hall). This subterranean chamber, believed to be built with the help of supernatural forces, remains remarkably intact and is the only part of the castle still standing. Yester Castle played a strategic role during the Wars of Scottish Independence, changing hands between the English and the Scots. Over the centuries, the castle fell into disrepair, and by the 16th century, it was largely abandoned in favour of the more modern Yester House. Today, the ruins of Yester Castle are enveloped by dense woodland, creating an atmospheric site for visitors intrigued by its blend of history and legend. Though the structure is largely in ruins, the Goblin Ha' continues to captivate those who venture to explore its mysterious depths. The site is accessible to the public, offering a glimpse into Scotland's medieval past and its rich tapestry of folklore.
